Heart beat Dance and Drumming
Dance & Drumming Residency with Godfrey Opio
Dates: May 19th-May 29th,2026
Location: Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School
Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School is pleased to host a two-week dance and drumming residency led by Ugandan artist and educator Godfrey Opio. This immersive experience will introduce students of all grades to traditional rhythms, movement, and songs from Uganda, alongside drumming practices that include instruments such as the djembe, a hand drum originating in West Africa.
Through participatory music-making and dance, students will explore rhythm as a foundation for learning, coordination, and community building. The residency offers an embodied cultural experience that supports artistic development, listening skills, and cross-cultural understanding in an age-appropriate and engaging way.
This residency reflects our commitment to experiential arts education and to honoring global traditions through movement, music, and shared creative expression.
